Why the "heat pumps don't work in the cold" advice is outdated
The concern is real, but it's from the 1990s. Older single-stage heat pumps hit a wall around 30-35°F. Variable-speed inverter compressors
Instead of running at 100% or 0%, a modern compressor modulates continuously from about 25% to 100%. This lets the system match its output to actual heat loss in real time, dramatically improving cold-weather COP and eliminating the on/off cycling that used to burn efficiency.
Enhanced vapor injection (EVI) and improved coil design
Cold-climate models add a second compressor stage that injects vapor mid-compression, effectively giving the system more capacity at low outdoor temperatures without oversizing for mild weather. Combined with larger, more efficient outdoor coils, the balance point drops from 30-35°F down to 5-15°F.
Better controls and defrost logic
Older heat pumps ran defrost on a fixed timer — sometimes when no defrost was needed, wasting energy. Modern controls sense coil frost buildup and only defrost when actually necessary, and finish faster when they do.
The result: a modern cold-climate heat pump maintains a COP of 2.5-3 down to about 5°F, and keeps running (at a lower COP) down to -13°F or colder before the compressor stops. That performance envelope covers every winter Van Buren has ever recorded, with margin to spare.

- Existing high-efficiency gas furnace under 10 years old with healthy AC — the equipment stack still has plenty of life and the replacement math doesn't win.
- Home without ductwork AND floor plan that doesn't work for ductless heads (long narrow homes, awkward wall availability).
- Very tight budget where any upgrade is a stretch — a well-maintained existing system will always beat a rushed replacement decision.
- Homes with severely undersized electrical service where a heat pump upgrade would trigger a service panel replacement whose cost wipes out the incentive.

Yes, comfortably. Modern heat pumps maintain a Coefficient of Performance of 2.5-3 (delivering 2-3× as much heat as they consume in electricity) down to about 5°F. Every serious quote should include the load calculation.
How loud is a heat pump outdoor unit? +
Modern variable-speed heat pumps are quieter than the AC condensers they replace. Sound ratings for current-generation cold-climate units run 55-65 dBA at 1 meter, roughly equivalent to conversational speech. At 15 feet — a typical setback from a bedroom window — you'll barely hear it. Older single-stage units were much louder because they hard-cycled between full-blast and off.
What happens if the heat pump fails in the middle of winter? +
Two safety nets. First, most modern heat pumps allow you to run the auxiliary heat directly if the heat pump section fails — you keep heating, just at higher operating cost, until we can get on-site. Second, our service crew runs same-day and next-day service through winter heating season.
