The setup — both options, briefly
Before the rounds start, the two options in one paragraph each.
Option A: Central AC + gas furnace ("split system")
The traditional Van Buren setup. An outdoor condenser handles cooling. Indoors, an evaporator coil sits on top of a gas furnace that handles heating. Two separate pieces of equipment with two separate service lives, sharing the same ductwork and blower. This is what most homes in the River Valley already have.
Option B: Heat pump + air handler
One outdoor unit that both cools in summer and heats in winter by reversing the refrigerant cycle. Paired with an indoor air handler (essentially a blower and coil, no combustion). Round 1 — Cooling
Draw. At the same tonnage and the same SEER2 rating, a heat pump and an AC deliver the same cooling capacity for the same energy input. A 3-ton 16 SEER2 heat pump cools identically to a 3-ton 16 SEER2 AC, because in cooling mode the two systems are literally doing the same physics. There is no meaningful difference to argue about here.
Round 2 — Heating cost

Two important things about that table. First: the incentive column narrows the gap between AC-plus-furnace and heat pump, and in many cases makes the heat pump slightly cheaper up-front than the split system after credits and rebates. Second: dual-fuel is the most expensive up-front but combines the strengths of both — heat pump efficiency in mild weather, gas furnace comfort in the coldest snaps. It's the honest answer for households that can afford it and want the best of both worlds.

Round 4 — Longevity and reliability
AC + furnace
- AC compressor lifespan: 12-18 years typical in the River Valley
- Furnace lifespan: 15-25 years typical
- Two systems, two failure clocks — but the two clocks are staggered, so total-system failure is rare
- If the AC dies in July, you still have a furnace next winter. If the furnace dies in January, you still have AC next summer.
Heat pump
- Compressor lifespan: 10-15 years typical, because the compressor runs year-round instead of five months
- Single point of failure — if the heat pump dies in January, backup electric strips can cover 100% of the load, but at the cost of a much higher bill until it's repaired
- Modern (2020+) heat pumps installed correctly are hitting the higher end of that range consistently; the older "heat pumps only last 10 years" reputation is out of date
- Fewer moving parts overall than an AC-plus-furnace combo — no combustion side, no heat exchanger, no gas valve
The honest answer: split systems are more resilient to a single-component failure. Heat pumps are simpler equipment with fewer combustion-related failure modes. Neither is dramatically better; both need annual maintenance to hit the top of their lifespan range.
Round 5 — Comfort at the vents
This one surprises homeowners who switch from gas to heat pump.
Gas furnace supply air
120-140°F at the register. Feels distinctly warm. Fast recovery from a setback (drop the thermostat overnight, raise it in the morning, the house heats quickly). What most Van Buren homeowners are used to.
Heat pump supply air
90-105°F at the register. Feels neutral or even slightly cool at the vent (since body temperature is 98.6°F), even though the room is heating up steadily. Do I need three-phase power or a service upgrade for a heat pump? +
Almost never. A typical residential heat pump runs on the same 240V single-phase service that a central AC runs on. The only case where a service upgrade comes up is a home with a 100-amp panel that's already close to capacity — adding electric-resistance backup strips can push it over. On a 15°F January morning, a properly sized modern heat pump keeps running at reduced efficiency, and electric-resistance backup strips (housed in the air handler) kick in to make up the shortfall. The house stays at setpoint; the bill for that day is higher because electric-resistance heat is less efficient than the heat-pump cycle. In Van Buren, this happens for a handful of hours per winter in a typical year — not enough to change the seasonal economics much.
Will a heat pump make my house drier or more humid than a gas furnace? +

Also ask what tier of equipment they're quoting (SEER2/HSPF2 for the heat pump; SEER2 for the AC and AFUE for the furnace) — a low-efficiency AC quote will always look cheaper than a high-efficiency heat pump quote, and vice versa.
