How to actually reduce indoor humidity in an Arkansas summer

The clammy-but-not-hot feeling homeowners describe every July in Van Buren is a humidity story, not a temperature story. Your thermostat says 74°F and you still feel sticky — because the air is holding more water than your AC has been able to pull out. Here's what's really going on, and the four tools that fix it in order of cost.

Why indoor humidity is the whole comfort story

Human comfort at a given temperature is dominated by relative humidity — the percentage of moisture the air is holding compared to the maximum it could hold at that temperature. Two rooms at 74°F feel completely different at 45% RH versus 65% RH. At 65% RH the same air feels three or four degrees warmer, sleep suffers, and you start reaching for a cooler thermostat setting to compensate. That is the wrong lever.

40–50% RH

The healthy comfort band for most Arkansas homes in summer. Skin feels dry, sleep is easy, wood floors and instruments stay stable.

50–55% RH

Still fine — the upper edge of comfortable. Fine target for AC-only systems in the River Valley.

55–60% RH

Starts to feel sticky. Books curl slightly on the shelf, cold drinks sweat quickly, sheets feel damp at night.

60%+ RH

Real building-science territory: dust mites thrive, condensation forms on cool surfaces, and mold gets a foothold in wall cavities and behind furniture.

Below 40% RH

Winter-only problem here. Static shocks, dry sinuses, hardwood cupping. Usually solved by a bypass humidifier — a topic for another article.

Van Buren summers, in dew-point terms

Van Buren sits in IECC climate zone 3A — hot and humid. Summer dew points in Crawford County run right around 71°F from mid-June through August. That single number matters more than the outdoor temperature, because dew point is an absolute measure of how much moisture is in the outdoor air, and every time a door opens or the makeup air flows in, that moisture comes with it.

Here is the math nobody explains: at 71°F dew point, if your indoor air is cooled to 74°F, the relative humidity is around 90% before anything condenses. Your AC has to hit the coil with air that's cool enough to drop below the dew point so moisture condenses out and drains away. If it can't run long enough to do that, you get cool clammy air — and that is the single most common IAQ complaint we hear in the River Valley.

Why AC alone often isn't enough

An air conditioner dehumidifies as a byproduct of cooling. Warm humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil, water condenses on the coil fins, drips into a drain pan, and runs out through the condensate line. The longer the AC runs, the more water it moves. That's it — that's the whole mechanism.

The failure mode is short runtime. If the AC is oversized for the house (too many tons of cooling per square foot), it hits the thermostat setpoint fast and shuts off — often after only 6 or 8 minutes. That is enough time to cool the air, but not enough time to condense meaningful moisture out. The result is a house at 74°F that feels like 78°F, and a homeowner who cranks the thermostat lower to compensate.

The four tools that fix it, in order of cost

There are exactly four levers to pull. Work through them in this order — the earlier ones cost the least and solve the most cases.

1. Fix the AC first

If the AC is oversized, leaking through poorly sealed ductwork, or a single-stage system in a mild-load house, no amount of downstream equipment will really solve the problem. A correctly-sized system (Manual J load calculation, not "3 tons per 1,500 sq ft" rule-of-thumb) that runs long, gentle cycles will pull 20–40 pints of water a day out of a Van Buren home in July without any help. 2. Tune the thermostat

Two thermostat settings sabotage humidity control more than any others: setting the fan to "on" instead of "auto," and running a single fixed setpoint. Fan-on continuously blows air across the wet evaporator coil after the compressor shuts off, and that moisture evaporates back into the house. Use "auto." And if you have a smart thermostat (Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell T-series), enable its humidity control mode so it will overcool by 1–2 degrees when RH is high. Total cost: $150–$300 if you don't already have one, $0 if you do.

3. Add a whole-house dehumidifier

A ducted whole-house dehumidifier is a dedicated moisture-removal appliance plumbed into the return duct with its own humidistat, so it runs independently of whether the AC is calling for cooling. This is the honest fix for a home that reads 60%+ RH with a working, correctly-sized AC. Typical installed cost in the River Valley is $2,500–$4,500 for a mid-tier ducted unit. 4. Portable dehumidifier for one room

A portable 50-pint dehumidifier from a big-box store runs $200–$400 and about $100/year in electricity. Legitimate stopgap for a basement, a bonus room over a garage, or a specific room that stays clammy. Not a whole-home solution — you can't ductwork it, it has to sit somewhere visible, and the drain either goes into a bucket you empty daily or a condensate pump you install anyway. Fine for one problem area, not a plan for the whole house.

What we tell customers not to do

Don't run bathroom exhaust fans as "whole-house dehumidification"

They exhaust <em>conditioned</em> air and pull humid outdoor air in through leaks to replace it. Net effect is worse than doing nothing.

Don't buy an "ionizer" or "UV humidity treatment" on the premise it removes moisture

It doesn't. UV lamps and ionizers have legitimate IAQ uses (see <a href="/learning-center/air-quality/air-filters-and-merv-ratings">air filters and MERV</a>), but they cannot remove water from air. Only cold surfaces and desiccants can.

Don't chase humidity with the AC set below 70°F

The overcooling wastes energy, the shorter cycle length doesn't help, and prolonged sub-70°F setpoints in a hot-humid climate cause condensation on interior surfaces — the opposite of the goal.

Don't ignore a stinky basement or crawlspace

That smell is telling you the RH down there is 70%+ and mold is already active. It won't get better on its own. This is exactly the case a whole-house dehumidifier (or an encapsulated crawl) is designed for.

If your indoor RH has been reading 60%+ for more than a week with the AC set at 74°F or below, that is diagnostic territory. What's the right indoor humidity for an Arkansas summer? +

Aim for 45–55% RH at your normal cooling setpoint. Below 40% is uncommon here in summer; above 60% is the point at which comfort, floors, and air quality all start to suffer.

Why does my house feel humid even when the AC runs constantly? +

Most often one of three things: the AC's coil is dirty (drops moisture-removal capacity 20%+), the ductwork leaks and pulls humid attic or crawlspace air in, or the system was sized for a much older, leakier version of the home and now short-cycles. A load calculation and a duct-blaster test will tell us which.

Will a dehumidifier make my house hotter? +

Slightly. Dehumidifiers work by condensing water, and the phase change releases heat — a whole-house unit adds about 1–2°F of load on the AC. In practice you'll feel more comfortable at a higher thermostat setting, so overall energy use often drops.

How is a dehumidifier different from just running the AC longer? +

The AC only runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. A dehumidifier runs when the humidistat calls for drying. On a cool, rainy day in June or September, indoor humidity can be 70% while the outdoor temperature is 68°F — the AC won't run at all, and only a dehumidifier can help. Are smart thermostats worth it just for humidity control? +

For $150–$250, yes — even if it only solves the humidity problem 40% of the time, that's the cheapest first move to make. Just make sure the model you pick actually supports a separate humidity setpoint, not just a temperature setpoint. Ecobee, Nest 4th-gen, and Honeywell T-series all do.
