What a whole-house dehumidifier actually is
A whole-house dehumidifier is a dedicated moisture-removal appliance — think of it as a small refrigeration system whose only job is to condense water out of the air. It's installed either directly into the return duct of your HVAC system or in a mechanical closet plumbed into the ductwork with its own bypass. It has its own humidistat, its own condensate drain, and its own compressor. Common brands you'll see on quotes: Aprilaire, Santa Fe, Ultra-Aire, and Honeywell.
Unlike a portable unit that sits in the corner of one room, a whole-house dehumidifier pulls air from every conditioned space through the return ducts, dries it, and pushes it back out to every supply register. One appliance, whole envelope. And critically, it runs based on humidity, not temperature — so it dries the house on a 68°F rainy September morning when the AC would never turn on.
Sizing: pints per day, not "square feet"
Whole-house dehumidifier capacity is rated in pints of water removed per day. Manufacturers publish those numbers at either AHAM conditions (80°F, 60% RH — kind of a fantasy for the River Valley) or DOE 2019 conditions (65°F, 60% RH — more honest for real-world use).

Operating cost is small but not zero. A 95-pint unit typically pulls 5–7 amps at 120V — so about 600–800 W when running. In peak Van Buren humidity, expect 6–10 hours of runtime per day in July and August. On SWEPCO's residential rate, that works out to roughly $10–$15 per month during humid months. Nothing during dry winter months.

How we scope a dehumidifier install

Step 1 — measure current humidity
We put dataloggers in three rooms for a week to get a real RH profile before quoting anything. Half the time we find a duct leak or a sizing issue that solves the problem cheaper.

Step 2 — verify AC and duct fundamentals
If the AC is short-cycling or the ductwork leaks 20%+, we fix those first. A dehumidifier on top of a broken system is throwing money at a symptom.

Step 3 — size and site the unit
Manual RH load calculation, pick the pint-per-day capacity, and confirm we have physical space in the mechanical closet or a suitable return-duct run.

Step 4 — integrate the controls
Whenever possible, we wire the dehumidifier to the thermostat so it coordinates with the AC (fan on when dehumidifier calls, stops if AC is actively dehumidifying). Aprilaire units talk to Aprilaire and Ecobee thermostats natively; other brands via generic relay.

Set the humidistat to 50%, run the system for a week, check the datalogger again. If we don't hit 50–55% RH steady, we're not done.

How is a whole-house dehumidifier different from just running my AC longer? +
The AC only runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. On a 68°F rainy September morning your AC is off — but indoor RH can be 70%+. A dehumidifier runs based on humidity, not temperature, so it works exactly when the AC can't.
Where does the water go? +
Either into your existing HVAC condensate line, or into a dedicated drain we plumb into the nearest waste stack. Most units also support a condensate pump if gravity drain isn't available.
How loud is it? +
Around 50–55 dB — about the same as a distant refrigerator. If it's installed in a mechanical closet with a door and some duct-liner insulation, you rarely hear it in living spaces.
Can I install one myself? +
Physically, yes — but doing it right requires cutting into ductwork, plumbing a drain, wiring 120V, and either tying into the thermostat or setting up a standalone humidistat. Manufacturer warranty on Aprilaire and Santa Fe units usually requires professional installation.
Will it help with allergies? +
Indirectly and significantly. Dust mites die at RH below 50%, mold spore growth stalls below 55%, and cockroaches struggle below 45%. Combined with a MERV 11 filter (see air filters & MERV ratings), it's the biggest single IAQ upgrade a River-Valley home can make.
