What MERV actually measures
MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — is an ASHRAE standard that rates a filter's ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. Residential filters run MERV 1 through MERV 16. Higher is better at trapping smaller particles, but every step up also increases the pressure the blower has to push against.

The airflow trade-off nobody warns you about
Here's the part big-box filter marketing never mentions: your residential HVAC blower was designed to push air against a specific amount of resistance, measured in inches of water column ("WC). Most residential systems installed before 2020 are rated for around 0.5" WC of total external static pressure. A brand-new, clean 1" MERV 8 pleated filter adds about 0.1" WC to that total. A 1" MERV 13 in the same slot? Often 0.25" WC when clean and 0.4" or higher when it starts loading up with dust.
The blower does not shrug and try harder. It moves less air. Less air across the evaporator coil means the coil gets colder than it should, which means water on the coil freezes into ice, which means the AC stops cooling entirely. That is one of the top three service calls we run every summer in Van Buren, and the cause is very often a well-intentioned homeowner who upgraded to a MERV 13 filter without changing the filter slot to a larger media cabinet. What to actually put in the slot
If your filter slot is 1" thick (most homes)
Stay in MERV 8 to MERV 11. The sweet spot for a River Valley home with typical dust and pollen loads is MERV 11 — it catches enough fine particulate to make a real dent in allergy symptoms without choking the blower. Change every 60–90 days in summer, longer in shoulder seasons. If you have pets or run a wood-heat stove in winter, closer to 30–45 days.
If you have a 4" or 5" media cabinet
Different world. The larger surface area means the same amount of air passes through 4–5x more media, so pressure drop stays low even at MERV 13 or 16. This is where MERV 13 lives comfortably. Change every 6–12 months. A media cabinet retrofit onto a 1" slot runs $400–$700 and is worth every dollar if you're allergy-sensitive.
If your system has an ECM variable-speed blower
ECM motors compensate for filter loading by ramping up. That sounds like it solves the problem — and it does, until the motor is running near full torque all the time, wearing itself out and using 200–400 W instead of 80 W. A media cabinet is the better answer even here.
The Van Buren allergen calendar
The River Valley has three distinct allergy seasons, and each one favors a different filter strategy.
February–April · tree pollen
Oak, cedar, and elm dominate. Particles are 20–100 microns — large enough that MERV 8 handles most of it. Filter change more often (30-day cycle).
May–August · grass pollen + summer mold spores
Mold spore counts stay elevated all summer because of high humidity. Spores run 3–30 microns — MERV 11 makes a real difference. Same period, keep humidity below 55% (see <a href="/learning-center/air-quality/reduce-home-humidity">reduce home humidity</a>).
August–October · ragweed
The heaviest allergy season for most local sufferers. Ragweed pollen is 15–25 microns — again, MERV 11 is the sweet spot. Fresh filter at the start of August.
Things that quietly kill systems
The other silent killer is skipping tune-ups. A properly-fitted MERV 11 filter is only doing its job if the return duct, blower wheel, and coil are clean and the static pressure is measured. That is exactly what a real tune-up includes — see what's actually in an HVAC tune-up.
What to do this month

Step 1 — measure your slot
Pull the current filter and read the size printed on the frame. Note whether it's 1" or 4"/5" thick.

Step 2 — pick a MERV level
1" slot: MERV 8 (basic) or MERV 11 (allergy-sensitive). 4–5" cabinet: MERV 13. Ignore anything higher unless a technician has measured your static pressure.

Step 3 — set a phone reminder
60 days for 1" filters, 6 months for 4–5" media. Skip the "change when it looks dirty" approach — by the time it looks dirty, airflow is already compromised.

Step 4 — consider a media cabinet retrofit

Frequently asked
Is MERV 13 always better than MERV 11? +
Only if your system can handle the extra pressure drop. In a 1" filter slot, MERV 11 is almost always the better choice. In a 4"–5" media cabinet, MERV 13 works fine.
Can I put a HEPA filter in my HVAC system? +
Not in a return grille. True HEPA (MERV 17+) needs its own fan because the pressure drop would stall a residential blower. If you need HEPA-grade filtration, we install a bypass filter unit with its own dedicated fan.
How often do I need to change a filter? +
1" filter: 30–90 days depending on pets, allergens, and season. 4"–5" media filter: 6–12 months. The dust-on-the-grille test is the fastest sanity check.
Do washable/reusable filters work? +
They exist, but their MERV rating is typically 1–4 — closer to a lint trap than a real filter. Fine as a pre-filter in front of a real filter, not as a primary.
Will a better filter help with COVID or the flu? +
Virus particles are 0.1 microns, which is below MERV 13's efficient-capture band. MERV 13 does catch most virus-laden respiratory droplets (2–5 microns) though. For real airborne virus mitigation, filtration is one layer — ventilation and humidity control are the others.
