What a frozen AC actually is
When you see a beard of ice on the copper suction line running out of the air handler — or worse, a solid block of frost caked on the indoor coil — you are looking at the end state of a slow feedback loop, not a random failure. Every part of that loop is triggered by one root cause: not enough heat is reaching the evaporator coil.
The evaporator coil (the indoor one) is designed to run right around 40°F when the system is properly charged and airflow is normal. Warm, humid house air blows across it, heat and moisture leave the air, and cool dry air blows into your ductwork. If that airflow drops — or if the refrigerant charge drops — the coil gets colder than 40°F. Below 32°F, the water condensing out of the air starts to freeze on the fins instead of dripping to the drain pan.
Ice is an insulator. Once even a thin layer of frost builds on the coil, it blocks airflow further, which drops the coil temperature further, which grows more ice. Fifteen minutes in, you have a manageable frost. Two hours in, the coil is a solid brick and no cool air is reaching the house at all. That's why the same problem looks like "my AC is running but not cooling" one day and "my AC is dripping water out of the ceiling" the next when the ice finally melts.
The four root causes, in order of likelihood
Every frozen-AC call we run ends up being one of these four. We list them in the order we actually see them across our Van Buren, Fort Smith, and Alma service calls — not alphabetical, not the order the internet lists them.
1. Dirty air filter (about half of every call)
A clogged filter starves the evaporator coil of the warm air it needs to stay above freezing. This is the single most common cause and the only one you can fix in ninety seconds with no tools.
2. Blocked returns or closed supply vents
Furniture pushed against a return grille, a rug covering a floor return, or an over-enthusiastic "close vents in unused rooms" strategy that shuts down more than 20-25% of the supplies. The system is starved for airflow even though the filter is clean.
3. Dirty evaporator coil
Years of dust and biofilm that got past a marginal filter. The coil looks like a shag carpet from the top. Airflow is choked at the coil itself. This needs a professional cleaning — a homeowner can't safely reach the fin surface without bending fins or damaging refrigerant lines.
4. Low refrigerant charge (always a leak)
A system that is low on refrigerant runs cold — colder than 40°F on the coil — because there isn't enough refrigerant to pick up the design amount of heat. Refrigerant does not "get used up." If it's low, it's leaking. This one needs an EPA-608 licensed technician.
There's a fifth we occasionally see: a failing blower motor or a bad blower capacitor. The blower still spins but at a lower speed than the design airflow, and the coil starves. This one usually announces itself with a change in the sound from the air handler — a lower pitch or a hum — before the freeze shows up.
Symptom to most-likely cause
Same freeze, different fingerprints. Use this to narrow down before you decide whether to try a self-fix or call.

The single most common myth
The other myth we hear a lot: "turn the thermostat colder to defrost it faster." That does the opposite. A colder setpoint keeps the compressor running, which keeps making cold refrigerant, which keeps growing the ice. To thaw a frozen coil you want the compressor off and only the indoor blower running.
What to try yourself, step by step
Before you call anyone: run through this. If it clears the freeze and the system holds temperature for the rest of the day, you've solved it. If it re-freezes within a day or two, you have a deeper cause and it's time for a tech.

Step 1 — Turn cooling off, blower on
At the thermostat, set MODE to OFF and FAN to ON. This kills the compressor (which is what's making cold) but keeps the indoor blower running (which is what melts the ice). Don't skip the fan-on step or the ice will take all day to melt.

Step 2 — Swap the filter
Pull the current filter. If it's grey, if you can't see light through it, or if it flexes when you hold it flat — it's the problem. Install a fresh one of the same size and MERV rating. Note the direction arrow. Write the install date on the frame in Sharpie so future-you doesn't have to guess.

Step 3 — Walk the house
Open every supply register. Open every return. Move any furniture that's within 12 inches of a return grille. If you have floor returns, check that rugs and toys aren't blocking them. If you've been closing off unused rooms — reopen at least half of them. Central AC is designed to work with the whole house connected.

Step 4 — Wait for the ice to fully melt
Two hours minimum in July heat, longer if the coil was really iced up. If you turn cooling back on with any ice still on the coil, it will re-freeze faster and worse. Put a towel under the air handler in case the melt overwhelms the drain pan.

Step 5 — Restart cooling, watch for one hour
Set thermostat back to COOL, fan back to AUTO. Set the temperature 3-4 degrees below room temperature. Check the copper suction line at the air handler after 45 minutes — it should feel cool but not have any frost. If it's frosting again, stop and call.
When to stop and call Tom's Heating & Air
Some of what causes a frozen AC is genuinely for the homeowner and some is genuinely for a licensed technician. Where the line falls:
You've swapped the filter and it re-freezes within 48 hours
That points at the coil, the blower, or refrigerant. All three need eyes and gauges on the equipment.
You hear hissing near the indoor coil or the copper line set
That's the sound of a refrigerant leak large enough to matter. EPA-608 handling required.
The blower motor sounds slower, louder, or is humming without spinning up
Motor bearings or capacitor. Running a stalled motor for 24 hours will kill it.
The evaporator coil is visibly filthy
Coil cleaning is a physical process (foaming cleaner, rinse, careful fin work) that damages fins if done wrong. Not a DIY.
It's happened before this season and cleared on its own
You have a marginal charge or a slow drainage/airflow issue that will only get worse. Fix it now, in July, before the 100°F stretch.
The most expensive version of this problem is the one that got ignored. A leaking system that finally kills its compressor in August is a ten-thousand-dollar problem. A leak found and repaired in June is closer to five hundred. Same leak, same physics — very different bill.

How long should I leave the AC off to let the ice melt? +
Two hours minimum with the indoor blower running (thermostat MODE=OFF, FAN=ON). If the coil was solidly iced, plan on three to four hours. In peak River Valley summer heat you can leave it thawing overnight without any harm — the compressor won't try to start, and the ice will drain out through the condensate line.
My AC freezes every summer around the same time. Is that normal? +
No. Recurring seasonal freezes almost always mean a slow refrigerant leak or a coil that never got fully cleaned. Each year the leak is worse, the freeze happens sooner in the summer, and the compressor works harder. Get it diagnosed — a leak search is inexpensive compared to what a stressed compressor costs.
Can I run a dehumidifier while the AC is thawing? +
You can, and honestly in an Arkansas July it's a good idea. A portable dehumidifier in the main living area will pull moisture and add a bit of heat to the space, which helps you stay comfortable for the few hours the AC is off. Just make sure it's draining somewhere that isn't the same drain as the frozen air handler.
What size filter and what MERV should I use? +
The size is printed on the edge of your current filter — match it exactly. For MERV, most Van Buren homes are best served by a MERV 8 or MERV 11 in a standard 1-inch filter slot. Higher MERV (13 and up) restricts airflow more; unless your system was specifically designed for it (a 4-inch or 5-inch media filter cabinet), running MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot is one of the fastest ways to freeze a coil.
Is it safe to keep running the AC if I don't see any ice yet? +
If the house is cooling normally and you don't see any frost on the copper suction line at the air handler, yes. If you see even a light beard of frost on that copper line, that's the first stage of a freeze — turn cooling off, let the coil warm back up, and troubleshoot before you keep running it.
