What warm air actually tells us

A properly running central AC produces a supply-air temperature 18-22°F below the return-air temperature. So if the air pulled into the return grille is 78°F, the air blowing out of your registers should be somewhere between 56°F and 60°F. Anything warmer than about a 12°F drop tells us the refrigeration cycle isn't finishing its job.

The four failures that produce warm supply air look nearly identical from the thermostat: the system "is on" but the house isn't dropping. What separates them is where in the cycle the failure is. The outdoor unit either isn't making cold refrigerant (compressor issue, capacitor issue, fan issue) or the refrigerant is there but not enough of it (charge issue). Or the whole system is fine and it's actually the thermostat lying to you.

Cause 1 — Thermostat is misconfigured

Not the glamorous cause, but the first one we always check, because it's free to rule out and it's more common than most homeowners expect — especially with smart thermostats that got "helpful" during a software update.

MODE is set to COOL, not HEAT or AUTO

AUTO isn't wrong, but in the shoulder seasons it can leave the system in whichever mode it last ran. Force COOL for the summer.

FAN is set to AUTO, not ON

FAN=ON runs the indoor blower 24/7 even when the compressor isn't calling for cool. That means the blower is pushing uncooled duct air through the house between cycles, and it feels like warm air is coming out of the vents. Set FAN to AUTO.

Setpoint is genuinely below the current room temperature

"78°F setpoint with a 74°F room" won't call for cool. Drop the setpoint 3-4 degrees below room to force a call and see what happens.

Battery isn't dead (on battery-powered thermostats)

A dying thermostat battery on a Honeywell or Ecobee will drop the call signal intermittently. If the display is dim or blank, that's it.

If everything on the thermostat looks correct and dropping the setpoint doesn't help, move on to cause 2.

Cause 2 — Outdoor fan motor has failed

The outdoor unit has two motors: the compressor (the barrel-shaped thing in the middle that hums) and the fan on top that pulls air through the outdoor coil. The fan's whole job is to move heat out of the refrigerant. If the fan quits but the compressor keeps running, the outdoor coil temperature climbs — and within a few minutes the compressor's high-pressure safety switch opens, killing cooling but leaving the indoor blower and the thermostat call happily running.

Symptoms: you walk out to the outdoor unit and hear the compressor humming but the top fan is not spinning. Sometimes the fan will start if you push a blade with a stick (do not do this while the unit is powered — see the warning below), which is a classic sign of a failed run capacitor rather than the motor itself.

Fan motors typically live 10-15 years. Van Buren summer humidity plus the sheer number of run hours we put on our equipment down here means we generally see failures on the shorter end of that range.

Cause 3 — The run capacitor has failed

The run capacitor is a small can-shaped component that gives the compressor and outdoor fan the extra kick they need to start turning against a load. It's electrically the most-stressed part of the outdoor unit, and it's the single most common outdoor-unit failure we service.

A weak or dead capacitor produces a very specific set of symptoms:

  • Outdoor unit clicks (contactor pulls in) but nothing spins.
  • Or: unit hums for 5-10 seconds, trips a breaker or an internal overload, and shuts off.
  • Or: fan runs but compressor doesn't (a partial cap failure where only one side of the dual capacitor is dead).
  • In all cases: the thermostat call is happening, the indoor blower is happily running, warm air is coming out of the vents.

Capacitors are inexpensive parts ($30-$80 depending on the microfarad rating) but replacing one requires opening the electrical service panel on the outdoor unit, discharging the old capacitor safely (they can hold a lethal charge even after the breaker is off), and installing a matched replacement. This is a call we typically clear same-day.

Cause 4 — Refrigerant charge has leaked out

A slow refrigerant leak that has finally gotten to "undercharged enough that the coil can't drop temperature" produces warm supply air with the outdoor unit still humming along. Unlike the frozen-coil version (where a moderate charge loss plus humidity produces ice), a bigger charge loss produces exactly this: cycle running, no ice, no cooling.

You cannot check refrigerant charge from outside the unit. That's a gauges-and-thermometer job, and it requires EPA-608 certification to legally handle refrigerant. The only useful homeowner-side hint is whether you've had prior refrigerant work done on this system in the past few years — repeated "just add a pound" visits are a strong sign of a leak that was never actually fixed.

Quick triage — outdoor sounds vs. cause

Walk out to the outdoor unit while the thermostat is calling for cool. Listen. Look.

What to check yourself before you call

    Step 1 — Confirm thermostat mode and setpoint

    MODE=COOL, FAN=AUTO, setpoint 3-4°F below the current room temp. Fresh battery if applicable.

    Step 2 — Walk to the outdoor unit

    Is the fan on top spinning? Is the compressor humming? All silent? Note what you see and hear — the technician will ask.

    Step 3 — Check the breaker

    In the electrical panel, look for the outdoor unit's breaker (labeled A/C, AC, HVAC, or CONDENSER). If it's tripped (halfway between ON and OFF), flip it fully OFF and then back ON once. If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting — call.

    Step 4 — Check the outdoor disconnect box

    Next to the outdoor unit there's a small metal box with a pull-out or a lever. Make sure it's fully engaged (some homeowners get bumped when landscaping is done and don't realize it).

    Step 5 — Check your filter

    A clogged filter usually produces a frozen coil (see the frozen-coil article), but occasionally the airflow drop alone produces warm supply air. Cheap thing to rule out.

    Step 6 — Note the time and any recent events

    Was there a storm last night? Did the power flicker? Did the unit make an unusual sound before it stopped cooling? Every piece of context makes the diagnostic faster.

When to call Tom's Heating & Air

Three of the four causes above are technician-required repairs. The rule of thumb:

Any outdoor-unit humming without spinning — same day

Fan motor or capacitor. Every hour of humming without cooling is compressor life you're spending.

Any suspicion of a refrigerant leak — same day

Running low-charge kills compressors. If in doubt, turn it off and use fans until a tech can get on-site.

Repeat capacitor failures within 12 months

That's a symptom of something else — surge issues, high-voltage line problems, or an oversized replacement cap masking a compressor start problem.

Warm supply air after any recent electrical event

Storm, near-miss lightning, breaker trip, generator use. Get eyes on the equipment before you keep running it.

Frequently asked

Why is the indoor fan blowing warm air even when I turn the AC off? +

Almost always a thermostat FAN=ON setting. When the fan runs continuously and the compressor isn't calling, the blower pushes uncooled duct air (which is at attic temperature, so 80°F+ in an Arkansas summer) into the house. It feels like the AC is broken. Set FAN=AUTO and the fan will only run when the compressor is actively cooling.

The outdoor unit was working fine, then a storm rolled through, and now it won't cool. What happened? +

Almost certainly a surge-damaged capacitor. Even a distant lightning strike sends transients down the utility line that weaken the dielectric inside the capacitor. It may still "work" for a few hot days after the storm and then quit on a 92°F afternoon when the compressor draws hardest. Whole-house surge protection is the best defense; a capacitor replacement is the typical fix.

Can I add a start capacitor or start kit to fix this? +

Sometimes — and specifically when a compressor is aging and having trouble starting under load, a hard-start kit is a legitimate fix that extends life a few years. It is NOT a fix for a failed run capacitor. Diagnosing which situation you're in requires meter readings on the compressor's LRA (locked rotor amps) and start behavior, which is a technician job.

Is it safe to keep the AC running if it's only slightly less cold than usual? +

If the temperature drop from return to supply is at least 15°F, the system is working, just working harder than optimal — safe to keep running while you schedule a checkup. If the drop is under 12°F, or the house isn't holding setpoint even overnight, stop running it and call. A weak system in an Arkansas summer will grind itself down fast.

How much does a capacitor replacement usually cost? +

In the Van Buren / Fort Smith market, a straightforward capacitor replacement in 2026 lands in the low-to-mid three figures once you include the service call, diagnostic, and part. It's one of the least expensive real repairs in HVAC. Pricing above that range often means the technician found a related issue (contactor, wiring, motor) that also needed attention.
