Why the shoulder weeks matter more than the tune-up itself
A professional tune-up is a real thing — see what's actually in a tune-up for the full checklist we run — but a lot of the summer-breakdown story is about the two months before the tune-up. Filters that were left in over winter. Cottonwood seed piling up on the outdoor condenser. Furniture that got pushed against a return grille during Christmas. Small stuff, but it stacks up.
Running through this in April buys you two things. First, it catches the obvious problems while you have time to solve them without an emergency-service premium. Second, it makes the professional spring tune-up faster and more useful — the technician spends the hour on measurement and adjustment instead of on a dirty filter.
The eight-step checklist

Step 1 — Swap the filter
Pull whatever is in there. Note the date if you wrote one on the frame (write one on the new filter today). Fresh MERV 8 or MERV 11 for a standard 1-inch slot; MERV 13+ only if you have a proper 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet. See our guide on filters + MERV ratings for the details on which to buy.

Step 2 — Clear a 2-foot radius around the outdoor condenser
Rake out leaves, pull weeds, move mulch back, coil up the garden hose, trim shrubs that have grown over the winter. The condenser rejects heat by pulling air in through its side coils and blowing it out the top — anything within 24 inches is choking that heat rejection.

Step 3 — Rinse the outdoor coil
Turn the outdoor disconnect switch off first (usually a gray box on the wall next to the condenser). Use a garden hose on a gentle spray — not a pressure washer, which bends fins permanently. Spray from the inside out if you can get to it; from the outside in if you can't. Let it drip dry. Turn the disconnect back on.

Step 4 — Flush the condensate drain
Find the primary condensate drain line — usually a white PVC pipe coming out of the air handler with a T-fitting on top. Pour a cup of hot water followed by a cup of distilled white vinegar down the T. This kills the algae that clogs drain lines every year in our humidity. If there's a float safety switch, verify it clicks the system off when lifted (test it before you need it).

Step 5 — Cycle the thermostat
Set to COOL, drop the setpoint 3-4°F below current room temperature. The compressor should kick on within 5 minutes (some thermostats have a compressor delay). Put your hand on the supply air at a nearby vent — within 10-15 minutes it should feel noticeably cool, ideally 15-20°F cooler than the return-air temperature. If it doesn't, note that for the tune-up call.

Step 6 — Walk every supply and return vent
Open every supply register in the house. Check that no furniture, curtains, or seasonal storage migrated in front of a return grille over the winter. On floor returns, check for rugs and pet beds. Central AC is designed to move a specific volume of air through the whole envelope — blocked returns are one of the fastest ways to freeze an evaporator coil.

Step 7 — Listen at startup
Stand near the outdoor unit and the indoor air handler during a cycle. New sounds — a buzz that wasn't there last year, a rattle on startup, a hum from the outdoor motor, a screech from the blower — are all early warnings of specific failures. Note them for the tune-up so the technician knows what to look for.

Step 8 — Book your spring tune-up
Before mid-May, when the schedule tightens up. A tune-up in April costs the same as a tune-up in June, but in April you're not competing with emergency calls for the schedule slot.
The cottonwood warning
Van Buren timing: work backward from June
Local timing matters. In Van Buren and Fort Smith we typically see:

The single most important date on that list is "professional tune-up complete" by mid-June. Once the first heat wave hits, every reputable company is running two weeks out on service, and the tune-up itself gets deprioritized behind emergencies.
Ninety minutes of DIY vs. an emergency service call
The whole checklist above takes about ninety minutes of a Saturday morning and costs the price of a filter and a bottle of vinegar. Here's the alternative:

Do I really need to turn off the disconnect before rinsing the outdoor coil? +
Yes. The disconnect box is right next to the condenser for exactly this reason — hosing water into a running electrical unit is a real hazard, and even a splash into an energized contactor can pit the points or short the control voltage. Flipping the switch takes two seconds. Do it.
Can I just skip the tune-up if I run through this checklist myself? +
The DIY list catches the airflow and cleanliness issues. What it doesn't catch is the sealed refrigerant system (pressures, superheat/subcooling), the electrical measurements (compressor and fan amp draws, capacitor microfarad rating, contactor condition), and the safety items that require gauges and meters. Those are the components that fail in July and cost the most to repair. The homeowner checklist and the professional tune-up are complements, not substitutes.
How often should I really change the filter? +
For a 1-inch pleated MERV 8 filter, every 60-90 days during heavy use (May through September in the River Valley) and every 90-120 days in the shoulder seasons. For a 4-inch or 5-inch media filter, every 6-12 months. Households with pets or a lot of foot traffic run shorter. Write the install date on the frame in Sharpie so you're not guessing.
What if I can't get to the outdoor coil because of a fence or landscaping? +
Skip the from-the-inside rinse and hose it from the outside in with a very gentle spray — better than nothing, but not as effective. Long-term, moving landscaping back is worth it: shrubs closer than 24 inches to the condenser are a permanent 5-15% efficiency hit. For fences, our tune-up techs carry compressed air and specialized coil cleaners for the cases where a hose just can't reach.
My AC has been running fine — do I really need to do all this? +
The equipment that "seems fine" in April is exactly the equipment that fails in July, because July is when the marginal parts finally give up under load. Every summer we run no-cool calls at homes whose systems ran perfectly the week before. Ninety minutes of prep is a very good insurance policy against a hot week and a $500 emergency bill.
